Clinic Facilities:
On Site:
*Staffed photography, digital confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope for fluorescein and ICG angiography (Heidelberg).
*Complete electrophysiologic testing (ERG, EOG, VEP).
*Humphrey visual field testing.
*Diode pumped laser (slit lamp and indirect ophthalmoscope).
*Portable diode laser.
*Two diagnostic ultrasound units.
*Cryo unit.
*Six fully equipped examination rooms.
*Procedure room.
Office Environment:
Full-time staff for scheduling, credentialing, surgery booking, billing and insurance certification. Ophthalmic technicians for pre-dilation, patient evaluation, vision, refraction and intraocular pressure evaluation. Secretaries for transcription, and scribes for assisting with examinations. Full-time photographers and technicians for FAs, OCT, ERG, EOG, VEP and visual fields. Assistance for in-office procedures.
Referral Base:
Large referral base (M.D. and OD) locally, from surrounding states, across the USA and occasionally from outside the USA. Excellent rapport with the M.D. and OD communities. Excellent rapport with UT Memphis Ophthalmology Department.
Weekly Schedule:
Approximate clinic hours 8:30 a.m. to 6:00-7:00 p.m. (M/W/F).
Approximate surgery hours 7:30 a.m. to 6:00-7:00 p.m. (T/TH).
First Year:
CRI Clinic with SC all day.
Second Year:
CRI clinic.
First Year:
Surgery with SC all day.
Second Year:
CRI clinic emergencies, walk-ins until 6:00 pm unless in surgery.
First Year:
Post-op patients/clinic in AM, surgery with SC in PM.
Second Year:
VA surgery in AM, VA clinic in PM.
First Year:
Surgery with SC all day.
Second Year:
HEI clinic 1st and 3rd Thursday PM, Med clinic 2nd Thursday PM. Surgery, walk-ins and emergencies. In office until 6:00 p.m. unless in surgery.
First Year:
Post-op patients, CRI clinic with 2nd year fellow first 4 - 6 months, ROP clinic (after 4 - 6 months).
Second Year:
CRI clinic 8:30 a.m. until finished about 6:00 p.m.
First Year:
Emergencies and call. Finish ROP rounds.
Second Year:
Emergencies and call one weekend a month.
Generally, first year fellow clinic consists of ROP and some adult, with more adults and less ROP in second year fellow clinic. Surgeries are performed at Baptist Memorial, St. Francis, Methodist University Hospital, Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, Hamilton Eye Institute ASC, and VA Medical Center.

In-office procedures (lasers, cryo, pneumatic retinopexy, injections) are performed as needed and generally at the time these present. Generally, no specific procedure time is scheduled. Angiograms are performed as needed and can be viewed on screen instantly or on hard copy within minutes.

Clinical Experience:
*Extensive Diabetic Retinopathy.
*Macular Disease: Macular holes, pucker, epimacular membranes, ARMD and OHS with CNV, myopic degeneration with CNV, CSR, CME.
*Vascular Disease: CRVO, CRAO, BRVO, BRAO, macroaneurysms, "Coat's Disease," Some vasculitis.
*Infectious Retina: Acute retinal necrosis, occasional HIV/CMV, toxoplasmosis, toxocariasis, and endophthalmitis.
*Genetic/Inherited Disease: Retinitis pigmentosa, Stargardt's, Rod/cone disease, and peripheral degenerations.
*Uveitis and pars planitis.
Surgical Experience:
*Extensive Diabetic retinopathy: Traction detachments, vitreous hemorrhages, and neovascular glaucoma.
*Surgical Macular Disease: Macular holes, pucker, and membranes.
*Submacular Surgery: OHS/myopic degeneration/idiopathic CNV.
*Retinal Detachments: Buckles, vitrectomy/gas, laser retinopexy, or vitrectomy/silicone oil depending on the situation.
*ROP traction detachments, PHPV, endophthalmitis, uveitis, cataract surgery complications.
*Ocular oncology co-managed with Dr. Barrett Haik, chairman of UT Memphis Department of Ophthalmology, with possibility for participation with brachytherapy as a second year fellow.
*First year fellow - 500-600 cases assisting Dr. Charles.
*Second year fellow - 140-160 cases as primary surgeon.
Laser Experience:
*Extensive diabetic retinopathy, BRVO, CRVO.
*Extensive ROP (25-30/YR).
*Extensive retinal tears/holes.
*Extensive intravitreal injections.
*Occasional sickle cell.
*Occasional laser irridectomy, YAG capsulotomy.
Fellow Responsibilities:
*ROP examinations and at various hospitals.
*ROP lasers.
*Participate in surgery with Dr. Charles (note that second year fellows operate independently).
*Surgery dictations.
*H&P for surgery patients.
*Hospital consults/after clinic hours consults (both rare).
*Call for clinic patients.
*ER hospital call (3-4 WK/YR).
*HEI Lions Club Retina Clinic with UT residents (second year fellow, 1/2 day on 1st and 3rd Thursday).
*MedPlex clinic with UT residents 2nd Thursday.
*VA Hospital clinic and surgery with UT residents every Wednesday.
*Resident lectures.

Dr. Charles and Dr. Calzada are always on 3rd call 24-7 x 365 days a year, available for consultation and always answers pages ASAP.
